Receive comfort

Working closely with partners, Ann provides informational, emotional, physical and spiritual comfort to pregnant and laboring women.

Honor your choices

Ann believes that birth is a profound rite of passage, honoring each mother’s choice in how she brings her child into this world and assists families in their consideration of options and preparations for birth and parenthood.

Gain confidence in your abilities

When working with Ann, a mother gains confidence in her ability to birth a child by being encouraged to love her body, listen to her body and to trust her body.

Receive individualized care customized for your needs

Ann tailors her care to what is needed in a specific moment and assists a mother to birth in the moment and in awareness and not toward an expected outcome.

Be prepared for the unexpected

When needed, Ann gently guides mothers and their families through unexpected or unwelcome events may occur in labor.

Work with someone who understands

As a mother, Ann has personally experienced the beauty of pregnancy and the wisdom and power that comes from childbirth and is honored to share in this transformational experience with other mothers.

What is a doula?

Giving birth to a baby is so much more than a physical phenomenon; it engages parents-to-be in a transformational experience, a key life event full of emotion and meaning. A doula who accompanies a woman in labor mothers the mother, taking care of her emotional needs throughout childbirth. A doula also provides support and suggestions for partners that can enhance their experiences of birth.

Guiding Principles of Birthing From Within

  1. Childbirth is a profound rite of passage, not a medical event (even when medical care is part of the birth).

  2. The essence of childbirth preparation is self-discovery, not assimilating obstetric information.

  3. The teacher (mentor) is "midwife" to the parents' discovery process, not the expert from whom wisdom flows.

  4. Childbirth preparation is a continually evolving process (for parents and teachers), not a static structure of techniques and knowledge.

  5. Parents' individual needs and differences determine class content.

  6. Active, creative self-expression is critical to childbirth preparation.

  7. The purpose of childbirth preparation is to prepare mothers to give birth-in-awareness, not to achieve a specific birth outcome.

  8. Pregnancy and birth outcome are influenced by a variety of factors, but can't be controlled by planning.

  9. In order to help parents mobilize their coping resources, it is critical for childbirth classes to acknowledge at unexpected, unwelcome events may happen during labor.

  10. Parents deserve support for any birth option which might be right for them (whether it be drugs, technology, home birth, or bottle-feeding).

  11. Pain is an inevitable part of childbirth, yet much can be done to ease suffering.

  12. Pain coping practices work best when integrated into daily life, rather than "dusted off" for labor.

  13. Father help best as birth guardians or loving partners, not as coaches; they also need support.

  14. For parents, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is a time of continuous learning and adjustment; holistic support and education should be available throughout that period.

  15. Childbirth preparation is also parent preparation.

Birth Art Classes

Exploring Your Pregnancy Through Art

Discover your own wisdom and birth power in this 3 hour workshop that prepares mothers to Birth From Within. Gain insight about what labor and birth will be like from your perspective. In making birth art, just bringing an image to light can be surprisingly revealing. Listening to it speak to you can tell you even more.

This gentle exploration process will bring overlooked resources and strengths to conscious awareness and identify obstacles and inhibitions that may prevent you from using them. This class is for everyone and no art experience is required. The purpose of this workshop is to explore what you find within yourself while you create the art and not in the final product. Birth Art is raw, honest and spontaneous as birth itself.

Private or group classes available. Call 541-344-1858 for more information
